Biography

The 1992-93 Illinois Central College (31-4) women’s basketball team won its second consecutive NJCAA Division II women’s national championship by defeating Kankakee Community College 76-71 in overtime in Hagerstown, Maryland. The all-Illinois final was the first intrastate title game in NJCAA history. The Cougars were the first NJCAA women’s team to repeat titles since Panola Junior College (Texas) won one-class championships in 1977 and 1978.

Sophomore Laura Trantina was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Lorene Ramsey was named Coach of the Year. Freshman Mandy Bryan, who joined Trantina on the all-tournament team, led the Cougars with 24 points in the championship game. Joy Westendorf set a tournament record with 30 assists.

Co-captains Megan Lanham and Jill Higgs led the team in its pressing, running, man-to-man defensive style that resulted in many wins over taller teams. Laura Trantina was selected as an NJCAA first-team All-American.
