Biography:

Dominique Canty’s success at (Chicago) Whitney Young High School continued into college and a long professional career. Canty was a high school All-American and four-time IBCA Class AA All-State selection – making the first team three times (1993-95) and third team in 1992.

From there she went to The University of Alabama and graduated as the all-time leading scorer, male or female, in school history with 2,294 points. Canty was a three-time All-American – earning first-team honors from the Associated Press and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) in 1999. In 1998, she was first-team USBWA and second-team AP and in 1997 she was third-team USBWA. She was a Naismith Player of the Year finalist in 1998 and 1999 and a three-time all-Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament selection. Canty became the first freshman to win the SEC tournament MVP award in 1996 and she led the Crimson Tide to three NCAA tournament Sweet 16 trips and another trip to the second round.

Canty led Alabama in scoring as a junior (21.5 ppg) and senior (19.7 ppg). In career rankings she tied for first in field goals made (828), first in free throws made (628) and attempted (875), second in field goal attempts (1,628), tied for third in average (18.1 ppg) and fifth in assists (459).

Canty was chosen in the third round of the 1999 WNBA draft (29th overall) by Detroit and averaged 7.3 points and 2.8 assists a game in a 14-year career that included stops in Chicago, Houston and Washington.
