Biography: Naperville Central capped an incredible 2-year run by winning its 30th straight game and capturing its 2nd consecutive IHSA Class AA Girls’ Basketball State Championship with a 48-37 victory over (Winnetka) New Trier High School. “Last year was like a magic carpet ride. This year was a struggle and lots of hard work, but we really earned it,” Coach Andy Nussbaum said after the game. NCHS built a 23-12 halftime lead and the Trevians never got closer than 9 points for the rest of the game. Candace Parker set a championship game record by blocking 8 shots. She also set the 3 game tournament record with 18 total blocks. She led all scorers with 29 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game. Tiffany Hudson added 10 points and 5 assists. Earlier, the Redhawks defeated (Chicago Heights) Marian Catholic HS 56-44 in the semi-final game behind 16 ponts and 16 rebounds by Parker and 13 points and 6 boards from Lauren Grochowski. In the quarterfinal game, Erica Carter hit two key 3-point baskets in the 4th quarter of the 61-53 comeback win over (Peoria) Richwoods HS. Note that this was the only time in the final 26 games in which the margin of victory was less than 10 points. Rachel Crissy led the team’s defensive effort, playing 95 or 96 minutes of the 3-game state tournament series, more than any other Redhawk.
