Biography: The Peoria Manual Rams sent legendary Hall of Fame coach Dick Van Scyoc, at the time the winningest boys coach in Illinois high school basketball history, out as a champion with a Class AA title in Champaign. Three-sport standout Brandun Hughes hit 2 free throws in the final seconds of a 61-60 win over Carbondale as Manual ended a 64-year drought since its first title. Hughes hit all 6 of his 3-pointers in the second half to finish with a game-high 27 points, was second in the tournament in scoring (97 points in 4 games) and made the all-tourney team. Hughes, Willie Coleman, Ivan Watson, Darrell Ivory and freshmen Sergio McClain and Marcus Griffin led the 27-6 Rams as they finished 11th in the final Associated Press poll. They were tested with victories over top programs such as Chicago Farragut, Chicago King, St. Louis Vashon, Chicago Westinghouse, Carbondale, Quincy, Rockford Boylan and East St. Louis Lincoln. Van Scyoc announced his retirement after the state tournament with a record of 826-400 in 45 years (the last 28 years at Manual).
