Biography: Late quarterfinal and championship game heroics saw Pinckneyville end a 46-year drought since its first title. In the Class A final, all-state and all-tourney pick Shane Hawkins’ drive and dish to Ryan Bruns for a 3-footer at the buzzer gave the Panthers a 67-65 victory. Bruns finished with a game-high 17 points and 6 rebounds and Hawkins and Jarritt Sommer added 13 points apiece as the fourth-ranked Panthers finished 33-2 for head coach Dick Corn. In the quarterfinal, Pinckneyville trailed top-ranked and unbeaten Teutopolis by 1 point but a triple-teamed Hawkins found a wide-open Sommer for the game-winning layup with six seconds to play. The Panthers’ only losses during the regular season were to Class AA state runnerup Carbondale. They won the Class A division of the Carbondale Holiday Tournament and the Benton Invitational Tournament and were unbeaten Southwestern Conference champions. The team was known for their unselfishness, togetherness and focused aim at a second state championship.
