Biography: Lowell Spurgeon played his prep basketball at Centralia High School. Lowell was a fine all-around athlete as he starred in football, track, and basketball. He made several All-State Teams in 1933 and 1934 for basketball. He was known as an outstanding shooter and jumper. This is evidenced by his setting of a state high jump record of 6’5 1/8”. This record stood for 24 years. He was also the leading scorer in the North Egypt Conference during his senior season at Centralia. Lowell then attended the University of Illinois where he had a great career in athletics. He was a captain of the U of I football squad in 1938. Lowell Spurgeon passed away on June 21, 2004 at the age of 87.
