Biography: Monmouth High School made the Sweet 16 three times under the one-class format. Mel Lacey played on two of those teams. He scored 1,267 points in a career spanning 1960, 1961, and 1962. He also grabbed 1,053 rebounds. His 55 points in one game was a school record. In his final two seasons, Mel was team captain. In 1962, Lacey was named to all-state teams by the Associated Press and The Chicago American. He was name all-Western Illinois in 1961 and 1962 as well. The then played at Western Illinois University under Stix Morley. He lettered all four years there, was All IIAC three times and team MVP in 1965 and 1966. Mel Lacey died on January 1, 2016 at the age of 71.
