Biography: McFarland enjoyed a successful prep career at now-closed McCray-Dewey High in Troy before embarking on bigger and better things at Division II Central Missouri State in Warrensburg.  During his high school days, the 6-foot-2 McFarland averaged a Metro East-best 28.0 points per game his senior season (1958-59) and led the Glen Bean-coached Trojans to a 21-6 record, the Madison Bond Clinton regular season championship and the conference tournament title. McFarland received All-State special mention honors his final year.  He scored 47 points in a 78-71 win over O’Fallon High School to match the Trojans’ single-game scoring record set by Glen Hall against Bunker Hill during the 1957-58 season. McFarland finished his prep career with 1,128 points, including 756 his senior season.  He’s third on the school’s all-time scoring list behind Mick Pahl (1,242 points) and Hall (1,141 points).  McFarland then averaged double-figure scoring all four years at Central Missouri. He hit for 20.8 points as a junior and 19.6 as senior, earning all-Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors both seasons for the Gene Bartow-coached Mules. Overall, he scored 1,262 points in 71 collegiate games. McFarland was elected to the Central Missouri State Hall of Fame in 2001.  After his college days, McFarland was drafted by the NBA St. Louis Hawks, but didn’t play pro basketball. However, he emerged as an accomplished semi-pro baseball and softball player. His younger brother, Keith, starred at Triad High and SIUE, and was selected to the IBCA Hall of Fame in 2008.
