Biography:
David Collins was a scoring machine who played four seasons at Casey High School from 1974-1978. As a senior, Collins averaged 36.6 ppg to rank second in the state with his 993 points. Collins scored 1,977 points in his career (note that the 3 point basket was not in effect during this era).
He set the state record for free throws made in a season, 287 of 321 for an .894 percentage as a senior. He also set the state career free throw percentage mark of 521-594 for .877.
He set the Casey record of 52 points in a regional game against Cumberland during the 1977-78 season. He set the record four times. Collins scored 40 points in seven consecutive games. Collins’ 96 points in two consecutive games (44 against Kansas and 52 against Cumberland) is a possible state record as is his 164 in a calendar week (five consecutive nights). In all 27 games as a senior Collins was his team’s leading scorer. His 126 points in three consecutive games is also a possible state record.
He was named All-Little Illini Conference, three times, and all-Decatur area, twice; Player of the Year by the Decatur Herald and Review in 1978; was named first-team all-state by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times, 1978.
He started as a freshman at Lakeland College and for 3 years at Indiana State-Evansville averaging about 8 ppg.
