Biography: Carroll obtained a BS in Education and MS in Education, both from Western Illinois University. He started his teaching career at Bowen High School, where he coached basketball, baseball and golf. When Bowen and Augusta, Illinois consolidated (to become Southeastern High School), he was named head basketball and baseball coach. He then coached basketball for one year at Robert Morris College in Carthage, two years at Geneseo High School, and three years at Trenton Junior College in Trenton, MO.  His ICC record was 381-250; his overall coaching record was 589-354.
He was hired by Illinois Central College (East Peoria) in 1979 as the Athletic Director and head basketball coach, retiring in 1999. His 1982 team was a national tournament qualifier and was also inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. His 1997 team took third place in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.  Carroll Herman died on July 19, 2018 at the age of 81.
