Biography: Basketball coaches are always looking to win the “big” one. The “big” one in 30 years of high school basketball coaching came on Jan. 11, 1980 for Fulton High School Coach Stan Borgman. The Steamers, despite scoring only five points in the third quarter, dropped Erie High School 61-53 to give Stan a record of 500-238. A member of the IBCA Board of Directors at the time, Stan had coached for two years at Hedrick, IA; seven at Pella, IA; and 22 seasons at Fulton HS where he also served as the school’s athletic director. The 6’7” Borgman, who was an all conference player himself at Central College of Iowa, saw his teams win 8 Illiowa Conference titles, 10 holiday tournaments, 10 IHSA Regional titles, 1 IHSA Sectional crown and an IHSA Super-sectional win. The week of Jan. 13-19, 1980 was proclaimed Stan Borgman Week in Fulton in honor of his “big” win. Stan Borgman passed away on January 24, 2014 at the age of 87.
