Biography: Swango covered sports for the News-Progress and Journal-Republican for 35 years. He was a play-by-play announcer for seven years on the radio at WCZQ and for 21 years on local cable TV. Swango also published books on Sullivan football, the 1988 Monticello football season and on Monticello sports in 1980. He published a non-sports book about his experiences in the US Army during the Korean War in 2001. The Charleston, Illinois native is a graduate of Charleston High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University. Swango coached golf for 27 years, football for 17 years and softball for 2 years. He was a basketball scorekeeper for 14 years and was a state finals basketball statistician one year. He also served as the official scorer of the IHSA state track and field meet for 30 years. Lynn was inducted into the Monticello High School Hall of Fame in 2012. Lynn Swango died on December 26, 2021 at the age of 90.
