Biography: Harlow Sutherland was the floor official in 1932 and 1933 as (Cicero) Morton and (Harvey) Thornton won state titles. Through 1956 Sutherland was considered one of the finest officials in the state. When he retired, H.V. Porter, then the executive director of the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations wrote: “It doesn’t seem quite the same when the names of Sutherland, Young, Millard, Schmidt and others are omitted from the Saturday morning newspaper accounts of battles on court and field. . .it is a milestone era when men put aside important responsibilities to maintain contact with school athletics and help keep them from degenerating into storms of ill will and distrust.”
