Biography:
The 1991-92 Illinois Central College (29-7) women’s basketball team started with 17 players, and because of injuries and illnesses such as a torn Achilles and rheumatoid arthritis, was reduced to 10 able-bodied players by tournament time.
After close wins over Parkland College in the regional championship and Hesston, Kansas in the district championship, and a 1-point comeback win over Kankakee Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament, Illinois Central romped to 20-point wins over Lackawanna, Pennsylvania and Lansing, Michigan to win the first NJCAA Division II national tournament held in Bismarck, North Dakota.
First-team all-national tournament selections were Daryl Strong, Laura Trantina and Tammy Wilkinson. Strong was selected Most Valuable Player and Wilkinson was selected to the NJCAA All-America first team. After a weak start, the early season ugly duckling had truly become Cinderella.
