Biography: The 1973 basketball team at tiny Ridgway High School distinguished itself from a long line of very fine Redgway basketball teams by regrouping after a season-opening loss to win the 1973 IHSA Class A State Championship. This team compiled the finest record in Ridgway history, winning 32 and losing just once. The Eagles won their final 32 games in a row. Undefeated in Greater Egyptian Conference competition, Ridgway’s Eagles won the GEC crown and the championship of the Eldorado Holiday Invitational tourney among other honors during their dream season.
The 1973 team featured a combination of outstanding stars–Mike Dixon, Brent Browning, Danny Stevens, Dennis Pearce, Mike Fromm and Jeff Drone. Ridgway placed three players on the All-State team in 1973–Dixon, Browning, and Stevens. This team went down in history as one of Ridgway’s finest. The team was coached by Hall of Famer Bob Dallas and ably assisted by John Schmitt.
Sadly, due to consolidation, Ridgway closed its doors in 1992.
