Biography:  The late Mark Hesse of O’Fallon illustrates a point that many of us overlook.  When one looks for a hero, s/he only needs to look at the sidelines to see someone who is a greater example of heroism than an athlete who acts poorly to life’s choices.

While battling the ravages of debilitating illness, Mark Hesse traveled to many basketball games and practice sessions.  He provided valuable statistical analysis for several O’Fallon High School teams.

Summer basketball tournaments in the Chicago area, the state finals in Champaign and NCAA tournament games played in midwestern cities were “must see” for Mark.  He refused to allow his physical challenges to deter his enjoyment of life.

Mark provided game stats for the Panther varsity and scouted upcoming opponents.  Mark was always a solid supporter of the Panther athletes.  He had compiled 25 years of statistical history for both the football and basketball programs at the time of his death. Although he could not shoot the ball, pass the ball or rebound the ball, Mark was a true hero in his community for his constant support of their young athletes.

Mark Hesse died on July 12, 1991 at the age of 36.
