Bob Riley

Biography: Bob Riley left a basketball legacy to the Quad Cities area. First as sophomore coach at Rock Island High School, Riley won 124 games and lost 16. As head varsity coach from 1955 – 1972, Riley won 301 games while losing 155. His teams won 5 IHSA Regional titles and made two Sweet 16 appearances from one of the most highly competitive areas of the state. Riley produced two all-state players in Bruce Hamming and Don Nelson (who went on to NBA fame as a player for the Celtics and as a coach). The Augustana College graduate was named the Quad City Coach of the Year in 1957, 1958, 1962, and 1966. Bob was the captain of the Augustana basketball team and its leading scorer in 1946, 1947 and 1948.  Riley was also named Augie’s most valuable player in 1947 and 1948. Bob Riley died on February 23, 2009 at the age of 89.
