Schuldt established a Dundee season scoring record of 490 points and a career mark of 1,320. In 1949 Schuldt was named the Chicago area Prep Athlete of the Year and also set a Little 7 Conference scoring mark of 317 points. Twice Schuldt was named to all-Chicago teams. He also won four letters in football at Dundee where he was named an all-Suburban halfback as a senior. Upon graduation, Schuldt was forced to make a difficult decision. Five major league baseball teams offered the right-handed pitcher five-figure bonuses to sign, while six of the top colleges offered him a basketball scholarship. At Illinois, Schuldt lettered in basketball in 1951 and 1953. The 1951 team took third in the NCAA. Schuldt also pitched baseball for Illinois for two seasons and played on a Big Ten championship team.
