Biography:
At the time of his induction, Morris Schwartz had been officiating for more than 50 years. He started out refereeing for Tony Malcak in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), calling 6 elementary school games for $2 a game on Saturday mornings. The more games he officiated the more he wanted.
Schwartz’s IHSA career included football, baseball, wrestling and softball in Chicago and the suburbs. He also did college basketball at Chicago area schools.
Schwartz started working as a physical education instructor for the Chicago Park District and conducted basketball instruction for boys ages 7 to 16. He worked in the Chicago Public Schools as a teacher, supervisor and administrator for 38 years before retiring July 1, 1998. The Skokie resident calls working the 1962 Chicago Public League semifinal between Carver and DuSable as the highlight of his career.
