Biography: Bob Spear is another of the Quincy Blue Devils’ inductees to the IBCA Hall of Fame. Spear was a two year starter for Coach Sherrill Hanks, averaging 10.7 ppg on the 28-5 state runner-up in 1971-72 while being named to the team’s top defensive award. The 1972-73 Blue Devils went 26-2 before losing to Lincoln High School in the Springfield Sectional. Spear was the team’s leading scorer with a 21.0 ppg average, being named the team’s most valuable player and top defensive player. Spear had the team’s best individual game of 36 points, most field goals in a game with 14 and most free throws in a game with 17. Spear established records for best field goal percentage for a game (90% on 9 of 10) and best field goal career mark (62% on 330-559). Spear had set the season field goal mark the previous year with 65% on 103 for 159. He was named captain of the 1973 Chicago Daily News all-state team. Spear was a four year starter at Illinois Wesleyan University and played alongside NBA standout, Jack Sikma. Spear, four times, was named to academic All-American honors and while being enrolled in the pre-med curriculum. He was also the Titan’s most accurate free throw shooter for three years.
