Biography:
Lou Stivers is a 1949 graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where he was inducted into that school’s Hall of Fame in 1985.
Stivers coached boys’ basketball at Carlinville High School for 13 seasons and produced five 20-game winners, five county titles and five South Central Conference titles.
For seven seasons, Stivers coached the girls’ teams at Carlinville. His teams won the only five conference titles for which they competed and the same for three county titles. His team lost in the IHSA tournament to the eventual runner-up Quincy Notre Dame 54-53 in 1981. The previous season Carlinville took fourth in the state.
Stivers officiated basketball for more than 30 years on both the high school and collegiate levels. Included as officiating partners were Spike Wilson, Clyde Cole, and Harry Fitzhugh.
Stivers retired and returned to Charleston. There he remained very active in basketball and other sports as a volunteer for both Eastern Illinois University and Charleston High School. Louis Stivers died on August 30, 2015 at the age of 90.
