Event Recap: A Tribute to Coach Gene Pingatore and St. Joseph’s High School
April 16, 2025. On a memorable evening at the Wintrust Sports Complex in Bedford Park, over 200 fans, former players, coaches, officials, and Illinois basketball supporters gathered to honor the life and legacy of Coach Gene Pingatore, the winningest coach in Illinois high school basketball history.
The tribute was hosted by the Basketball Museum of Illinois, and Museum Chairman Bruce Firchau opened the event by saluting Coach Pingatore’s unmatched legacy. Village of Bedford Park, Illinois, Mayor Dave Brady followed with words about the Museum’s physical location and future in Bedford Park and the excitement of sharing Phase 2 of the Wintrust Complex with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.
Coach Gene Pingatore’s legendary career spanned 50 years at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois, where he built a powerhouse program rooted in discipline, class, and consistency. His coaching record is nothing short of historic:

1,035 career wins, the most by any high school coach in Illinois history

Led the St. Joseph Chargers to two IHSA state championships

Coached hundreds of players, many of whom went on to play at the collegiate and professional levels

Renowned for his development of talent and commitment to mentorship both on and off the court
The tribute continued with an eight-man panel of former players, opposing coaches, officials, and media members. They shared emotional, humorous, and unforgettable stories—each one illustrating the character and influence of Coach Pingatore.
A highlight of the night was the announcement from Illinois State House Representative, Cyril Nichols establishing an official Gene Pingatore Day of Honor to be observed annually.

Attending our Gene Pingatore Celebration Event was Media IBCA HOF’er Bob Sakamota (pictured left). Bob participated on our panel where they shared special memories on Coach Pingatore. Sakamota who is now retired is considered an icon when it came to covering basketball in Illinois. On the right, Vincent Johnson & Dave Nanninga, both great historians. Dave is the creator of the Illinois H.S. Glory Days website & Vincent’s book on gyms in Illinois will be available in October.
