Biography:

Wayne Meece contributed greatly to the sport of basketball.  The Normal resident spent more than 20 years officiating high school and college basketball.  In 1974, 1975, and 1976 Meece worked the IHSA Class AA Boys’ State Finals.  Along with Wilford Crotz of West Peoria, he drew the assignment for the 1975 championship game,  when (Chicago) Phillips defeated (Chicago Heights) Bloom, 76-48.

Meece served the IBCA as an official for its all-star games in the 1970’s.  Along with Ed Norfleet, Meece worked the Champaign Central-Urbana home and home rivalry for more than 10 straight years.

Holiday tournament assignments have taken Meece to Danville, Fairbury, Monticello, and Pontiac.  He served the Missouri Valley as it’s officials’ observer at Illinois State University home games.  Meece was always a leader in helping to develop young officials.  He served the Bloomington-Normal Officials Association for three years, and was twice awarded the Allan Russell Award for outstanding contributions to officiating.

Meece enjoyed a 20 year career as a Big Ten Conference football official.  Wayne Meece died on October 16, 2016 at the age of 82.
